Founder | Womens Work

As part of my role as Vice-President of the AIPA, I wanted to create a project to highlight the wonderful work that our Female members do, and how they are often underrepresented in the Advertising Industry.

Women’s Work is a unique collaboration of women photographers from the Advertising and Illustrative Photographers’ Association (AIPA). Coinciding with International Women’s Day, Women’s Work is an opportunity to explore the female gaze as an alternative to the ubiquitous male perspectives that tend to dominate commercial and advertising photography.

I brought together the group of women as I really want to give people a nudge and make them question their assumptions about Women in Photography.

The group has exhibited a number of projects including A Different Lens (2020), Underexposed (2021), Kaha [Strength] (2021), and an AR Exhibition (2022).

Women make up the majority of photography students in NZ universities, up to 70-80% in some courses, but the number of women commercial photographers represented by photo agents is much lower, closer to 20%.

On International Woman’s Day I chair a panel discussion that brought together artists and industry professionals to discuss issues around the gender imbalance in the photographic industries.

Women’s Work is an opportunity to take a break from the male perspective and experience the world through a different lens: the female gaze.
